North Bay, Ontario - Search and Rescue

Some information about the Search and Rescue Organization that I am apart of.

I recently got certfied as a Spotter and will be working towards my navigation certifciation.

BAYSAR is an all civilian volunteer organization based in North Bay that is a part of Canada’s nation-wide structure of search and rescue units. We are partially funded through the Department of National Defence and Transport Canada and maintain very high standards of training and readiness.  BAYSAR is on standby 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for both air and ground searches as requested by local and provincial police forces and the military Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC).   Our volunteer ground search teams and aircrew members are well-trained, motivated and certified to Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA) standards.  Every 18 months we must pass an in-depth and demanding evaluation involving both ground and air emergency scenarios conducted by CASARA Ontario personnel and Canadian Forces Liaison Officers from 424 Search and Rescue Squadron in Trenton, Ontario.

In the 20 years that BAYSAR has been in operation, its volunteers have been involved in dozens of air and ground searches in the North Bay and surrounding areas and has earned many accolades from police forces and the Canadian military.  Air searches have involved our members flying aboard Canadian Air Force SAR C-130 Hercules and Griffon helicopters and our own civilian aircraft, a retired US Air Force Cessna O-2A, a Cessna 182 and a Cessna-172,  in wide-ranging operations that have taken us as far west as Thunder Bay, east to North Eastern Quebec, south to the outskirts of Toronto and north to James Bay.

BAYSAR is also a local community service organization, fundraising through charity bingo and being a key-player in the northern Ontario School Police Emergency Action Response (SPEAR) initiative as well as briefing children on what to do if they find themselves lost in the wilderness through our “Hug-a-Tree” program.

Welcome to FuzzyBeard.com

Welcome to FuzzyBeard.com.  I have been trying to develop a site that I can share my personal adventures and talk about the great outdoors.  Why FuzzyBeard?  Well once you see my photos you will see why I thought FuzzyBeard would be an appropriate name for my site. I try to engage in all activities that range from camping, hiking, canoeing, climbing and what I am most passion about is ice climbing.

My climbing partner and I were doing a bunch of bouldering and once the winter season rolled around we werent too sure what we were going to do with our time so we decided to take an ice climbing course in 2008 and fell in love with it immediately.  Before the next season rolled around we went and bought everything we need to ice climb and proceeded to ice climb at least twice a week and havent looked back since.

I was involved in an ice climbing accident end of March 2009 where I was doing a solo rope climb.  I was at about the 60ft mark and was tired, so I decided to take a break and just hang there for a few to gather strength before continuing on.  Well I leaned back, popped the axes out and my protection (prusik) didnt catch and I fell 60 feet and broke both my ankles...yep the story was quite epic.  To read more click on the story above called Hands and Knees for the full story. Hopefully there will be no more accidents and nothing but great stories about this upcoming ice season which is just around the corner.  I am healed and was given the go ahead by my surgeon to get back out on the ice.

Enjoy the stories, blog, gear reviews and whatever else pertains to my adventures!!

Peace
Phil C.
